It's not surprising that the reason many families choose to live in the Carmel Clay community is because of its excellent public school system. Its students' scholastic, artistic and athletic achievements are consistently outstanding year after year. For example, on average 89% of Carmel High School Students enroll in four-year colleges. Add 4% of the class entering two-year colleges or trade schools and 2% were foreign exchange students returning to their own countries to pursue further education there, for a total of 95% of Carmel High School graduates continuing their education.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) score results show that Carmel High School students scored an average of 551 on the math portion of the test, 53 points higher than the state average and 39 points higher than the national average. On the verbal portion, Carmel students scored an average of 536, 40 points higher than the state average and 31 points higher than the national average. These and other indicators demonstrate that Carmel Clay students are well-prepared throughout their educational careers for high scholastic achievement.

Achievements in the Arts and Academics.

  • In the performing arts, Carmel students have won state or regional championships in marching band, swing choir, jazz band, orchestra and drama.
  • The student publications have won honors at the state and national level.
  • The speech club and the academic competition teams have achieved numerous successes in state competition.
  • The Science Olympiad Team has achieved the highest ranking at state and national levels.

While Carmel Clay students are serious about academics, they are also serious about athletics.

Carmel High School won its first IHSAA State Championship in 1970 when Coach Don Huffer's boys' golf team captured the state title with a team score of 611 in the first year of the two day tournament format.  Since that beginning, CHS has won 87 state championships;  78 of which are IHSAA titles, 8 Indiana High School Soccer Association titles, and one Indiana Cheerleading Association championship.  The Hounds have won state championships in 16 of the 21 sports offered at CHS.  In addition to 84 championships, CHS has been the state runner-up 40 times since 1966.  Of the 20 IHSAA sports, the Greyhounds have been state champion or state runner-up in 19 of the 20 currently offered.

A great source of pride are the 22 Carmel High School graduates who have received a state mental attitude award.  In addition to these outstanding young people, CHS is the home of 145 individual, doubles, or relay state champions.
