Thomson Multimedia Today
With
its flagship RCA and GE brand names, Thomson
Consumer Electronics, Inc., located in
Carmel,
Indiana,
a subsidiary of Thomson Multimedia, manufactures
and markets color TV sets, VCRs, digital satellite
decoders, DVD players, camcorders, home audio
systems, telephones, and a myriad of accessories.
Thomson Direct, Inc. (TDI) is a subsidiary of
Thomson Consumer Electronics, Inc. which markets
and sells RCA, GE and ProScan brands of consumer
electronics products via the Internet.
Thomson Multimedia is the world's largest supplier
of large and very large color TV picture tubes and
is actively developing new digital entertainment
products that will allow consumers to interact
with new media through the internet and other
digital systems.
In December 1998, four corporate investors --
MICROSOFT, DIRECTV, ALCATEL, and NEC -- took
equity positions in Thomson Multimedia, after a
global search that matched Thomson Multimedia's
strengths with key partners to develop new
products and services.
Developing and renewing itself by taking advantage
of converging technologies and markets in
television, computers, and telecommunications,
Thomson Multimedia invests in such high
value-added activities as components and new
television-related services as electronic program
guides, interactive TV, and home internet access
products.
As communications, entertainment, and information
devices are brought together, Thomson Multimedia
aims to become, by the year 2002, a global leader
in new media services, distribution, and
manufacturing.
With new home services built around the consumers
TV set, Thomson Multimedia believes it has a
unique asset -- an understanding of how consumers
enjoy entertainment and what they expect from
television.
Electronic Program Guides are only the beginning
for Thomson Multimedia in the area of new media
and services that will transform television as we
know it today.
A new breed of TV-enhanced television allows
consumers to receive additional information about
the program they're watching, access new
interactive content and information services, and
even send and receive e-mail conveniently from the
family TV.
