Carmel Urban Design Initiative

The Carmel Urban Design Initiative is an education and consensus-building project that has been initiated by the City of Carmel’s Department of Community Services (DOCS) and facilitated by EDEN Land and Design, to create a better understanding of important land use issues, and introduce urban design principles into the on-going city building efforts of the City of Carmel, Indiana.

Throughout the past several months, the Carmel Urban Design Initiative held a series of presentations, guest lectures and discussions, with topics including housing and retail market trends, urban design, density and the environment.  Carmel’s elected and appointed officials have been identified as significant leaders and have been formally asked to participate.  All activities are open to the public.  For more information, please contact Adrienne Keeling, Planning Administrator at 317.571.2417 or akeeling@carmel.in.gov

In addition to a video production, which may be viewed online or on Carmel’s Public Access Channel, the Carmel Urban Design Initiative is publishing a booklet and display piece.  The booklet, titled "Civic Design", is a compilation of guiding design principles as a result of recent field study, education and research.  The Principles described and illustrated in Civic Design will serve as the basis for the development of a Central Business District plan, as well as the basis for a future update of the City of Carmel’s Comprehensive Plan, which was last updated in 1996.  If you have any questions, please contact Adrienne Keeling, Planning Administrator at 317.571.2417 or akeeling@carmel.in.gov.
