News Release:
- Carmel's Recycling Program Receives Statewide Award
Carmel's
Household Hazardous Waste program began in March 1998 and is administered by
the City of Carmel Water-Wastewater Utility.
"The
City of Carmel's Household Hazardous Waste Disposal facility is very pleased
to offer Carmel citizens and Carmel Utilities’ customers a safe, convenient
way to get rid of household hazardous waste," said Mayor Jim Brainard.
Items such as solvents, pesticides
and paint products can pose fire hazards and, if not disposed of properly, may
threaten local waterways and groundwater.
In 1999, 1,323 Carmel
Households brought in 19,760 Hazardous waste items for proper disposal.
In 2000, 1,679 Carmel
Households brought in 23,426 hazardous waste items, an increase of 356
households or 21.2% over 1999 figures. There was an increase of 15.7% items
dropped off.
In 2001, 2,831 Carmel
Households participated in our program by bringing in 37,993 hazardous waste items for proper disposal.
In 2002, 2,910 Carmel
Households participated in our program by bringing in 32,388 hazardous waste items for proper disposal.
In 2003, 3,422 Carmel
Households participated in our program by bringing in thousands of Hazardous waste items for proper disposal.
In 2003 we shipped out of Carmel 122,283 pounds or 61.1
tons of waste through American Industrial Services as well as 402 20# propane
tanks.
In 2005, 71.1 tons of waste were shipped out of Carmel through
American Industrial Services and 45,500 total items were collected.
In 2006, 76.5 tons of Household Hazardous Waste were shipped out of Carmel through
American Industrial Services (we are no longer counting total items, due to
their constant increase and labor costs.)
In 2007, 77.7 tons of Household Hazardous Waste were shipped out of Carmel through
American Industrial Services (we are no longer counting total items, due to
their constant increase and labor costs.)
In 2008, 76.1 tons of Household Hazardous Waste were shipped out of Carmel through
American Industrial Services (we are no longer counting total items, due to
their constant increase and labor costs.)
In 2009, 86.1 tons of Household Hazardous Waste were shipped out of Carmel through
American Industrial Services (we are no longer counting total items, due to
their constant increase and labor costs.)
Household Hazardous Waste

Our Household Hazardous Waste Video
can be seen on the Carmel City Government access
Channel 16.
We participated in several off
site lectures on Household Hazardous Waste.
This
program is offered free-of-charge to
City of Carmel residents and/or Carmel Utilities residential customers.
Heritage Environmental Services collects the hazardous items dropped off at
the Carmel facility for further recycling or proper disposal.
Another
purpose of the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal program is to educate our
youth about the benefits of recycling and how to properly dispose of hazardous
materials they may have at home. To schedule a tour, phone Bill Kellam

HHWD site.

Carmel
Mayor Jim Brainard announced in 1999 that the City added the capability
for disposal of "medical sharps" including lancets, hypodermic
needles and syringes to its successful Household Hazardous Waste disposal
program. The addition of the Medical Sharps Program will give Carmel residents
and/or customers of the Carmel Water-Wastewater Utility a safe place to
dispose of needles and other sharp objects used for daily health care needs.
Carmel
residents who want to participate in the program may pick up a free medical
sharps waste container at the Household Hazardous Waste site. When the
container is full, they simply return the container to the site and pick up
another one.
St.
Vincent's Hospital donated 240 containers specifically designed for the
safe disposal of medical sharps. When those containers are all distributed,
St. Vincent's will provide the City with containers at St. Vincent's cost.
Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI) has agreed to pick up and dispose of the
medical sharps at the same rate offered local hospitals. "We were very
pleased to be the first to offer Carmel citizens and Carmel Utilities’
customers a safe, convenient way to get rid of household hazardous waste and
this is a great addition to our current program," said Mayor Jim
Brainard.
